Enhancing Critical Thinking with Scrible Assignments
We’re excited to share that Scrible won this year’s Tech & Learning Awards of Excellence: Back to School 2024 within the Secondary category! These awards honor top products that provide real value and innovation to schools. Scrible has been recognized for enhancing critical thinking in the research and writing process. Read below for how Scrible can help your students develop these key skills!
1. Sources: Encouraging Comprehensive Research
Set Source Requirements: When creating an assignment, set minimum source counts and monitor the number of sources students add. This ensures students are engaging with enough material to support their assignments. You can even pre-load credible and questionable sources to challenge students’ evaluation of reliable and unreliable information.
Track Source Usage: Utilize the Assignment Dashboard’s Progress Monitoring to monitor how many sources students add. This feature helps you gauge the depth and diversity of their research.
Enable Annotated Bibliographies: When creating an assignment, require students to write citation annotations, justifying their sources. This practice encourages critical thinking about the value and credibility of each source.
2. Annotations: Deepening Engagement with Texts
Use Annotation Keys: Establish Annotation Keys to guide students on what to look for when evaluating sources. This helps them highlight evidence, question credibility, and actively engage with the material. It supports students in developing a critical eye for analyzing information.
Dissect Arguments with Annotations: Encourage students to annotate key arguments and counterarguments within their sources. This practice helps them identify and understand different perspectives, fostering analytical thinking as they interact with the text.
3. Outlines and Papers: Structuring Arguments and Ideas
Use the Outline Feature: The Outline sub-tab helps students organize their thesis, supporting points, evidence, and counterarguments. Encourage students to use the "Add from Sources" button to incorporate evidence directly into their outline, ensuring a well-supported and structured argument.
Enable Paper Writing: The Papers sub-tab allows you to add a writing component, set word count requirements, and track the time students spend on their assignments. While this feature is enabled by default, you have the option to disable it based on your preference. Use the Scrible Writer add-on to streamline the writing process.
Citation Tools: Let students use Scrible’s built-in citation tools to reinforce proper source attribution and enhance their academic writing skills.
