Assignment Life Cycle for Educators

(Note that this article refers to the new version of assignments in Scrible to be released in Fall 2021)

As an educator, assignments in Scrible have the following 4 life cycle stages.

Draft

When an educator first creates an assignment or creates a duplicate of an existing assignment, the new assignment is in the Draft state.  It is only visible to the educator and other co-teachers on the assignment.  In the Draft state, all configuration options for the assignment are available.

Assigned

Once the configuration of the assignment is completed and the educator can click the Assign button which will transition the assignment to the Assigned state.  It will now be available students to work on according to the distribution method selected.  Certain configuration options will no longer be available - in particular the distribution method cannot be changed once assigned.

Closed

Assignments will remain in the Assigned state until the Close Date at which point they will transition to the Closed state.  When the assignment transitions to the Closed state, student's work on assignments will automatically be locked as-is (submitted by the student or not) for the educator's review.  If needed, the educator can adjust the Close Date to the future, which will transition the assignment back into the Assigned state allowing students additional time to complete work.

Completed

Once grading of the assignment is complete, the educator can choose to Return work for that assignment.  This moves the assignment into the Completed state and the students are given back full access to their work (the equivalent of handing back physical papers for an assignment) so they can retain it as a portfolio of their work.
