Capturing Citations Automatically

When you add an online source to your Scrible library, citation information is captured automatically. This guide explains how automatic citation capture works and how to verify or edit the captured information.

How Automatic Citation Capture Works

When you add an online source to your library, Scrible extracts citation metadata from the page, including:

  • Title

  • Author or publisher

  • Publication date

  • URL

  • Website name

The accuracy of extracted information depends on the source type:

  • Academic databases: Sources from databases like JSTOR, Google Scholar, or university libraries typically have complete, well-structured metadata.

  • Standard websites: News articles, blogs, and general web pages may have incomplete metadata that requires manual review.

Verifying and Editing Citations

Before using a source in your research, verify that the citation information is accurate. To review and edit citation details:

  1. Open the source in reader view.

  2. Click the Citation button in the right toolbar

  1. Review the extracted citation details in the Citation sidebar.

  2. Add missing information or correct any errors in the available fields.

  1. Close the sidebar when finished. Your changes save automatically.

Tips

  • Check citations early: Review citation details when you first add a source, while the information is fresh.

  • Academic sources are more reliable: Sources from academic databases usually have more complete metadata than general websites.

  • Manual entry is always available: If automatic capture misses information, you can enter it manually in the Citation sidebar.
