How does Scrible help prevent plagiarism?
Our Proactive vs. Reactive Approach
We do not have a plagiarism checker built in to Scrible. We have taken a more proactive approach by providing tools to help do the right thing in the first place vs. reactively checking for cheating.
An example of our proactive supportive tooling for students would be how the Scrible Writer makes it easy for them to insert quotes with the in-text citation instead of copy/pasting.
An example of our proactive supportive tooling for educators would be having quick data available for the teacher to reference (student annotations, assignment completion, etc.) to easily review to ensure that the student did the work required to write the paper.
AI ~ ChatGPT
We do understand that the introduction of AI/ChatGPT has shaken up assessing student writing work in schools. Traditional plagiarism detectors aren't effective with identifying AI generated content because it is generative and impossible to reference. Newly introduced AI plagiarism algorithms are showing non-trivial false positive rates, falsely accusing students, and, therefore, also essentially ineffective on identifying AI plagiarism correctly.
Setting Educators & Students Up For Success
Thankfully, Scrible was built pre-AI in the classroom with the sole focus on supporting students and educators by showing the students work, their progress and providing transparency during each step of their writing process. We would recommend using our Progress Monitoring feature to check how much time your student spent on each step (research, analysis, synthesis & writing). With trackable data, you can confidently assess the originality and authenticity of your students' efforts.
